Literature Review

The Environmental Protection Agency provides an abundance of resources regarding the properties of oil and behavior of oil in marine environments after spillage. Current existing solutions to oil spills such as booms, skimmers, chemical dispersants, and onsite burning  all have glaring issues. These solutions either take exceedingly long to deploy or are extremely harmful to the environment. Specifically, chemical dispersants and onsite burning poison not only marine life but also those who endeavor to clean oil spills. Our product not only is completely safe for every party involved, but is also quickly deployable.

We drew much of our inspiration from generic oil absorbent pads, Space X's Starlink satellite folding mechanism, and BYU's compliant mechanism research lab. Starlink provided insight for creating a linearly retracting prototype with smooth folding. BYU's research provided insight into the utility of at once maximizing and minimizing surface area in a folding design.
